Social Ministry & Missions

Social Ministry takes place within the congregation, the community, and throughout the world.  God calls us to take care of one another and the least among us.  God’s Work – Our Hands!

Our Social Ministry & Missions Team is led by Council Members Dave Mulder and Amanda Bishop.  They can answer any questions, and help you find a way to support those in need!  If you would like him to contact you, please leave a message with the church office, 801-278-1412.

These are some of the programs and ways that we offer support; click on the name to visit their website:

family-promise-logoFamily Promise  We belong to the Utah branch of this national, interdenominational organization that supports families who find themselves in the circumstance of homelessness.  OSLC is one of a number of congregations in the Salt Lake Valley that serve in rotation as a host site, offering temporary shelter and meals to our guests one week at a time, four or five times a year.  While their basic needs are being met, guests are able to save their earnings, which allows them to move into housing within 30-45 days.  Of the families who transitioned from the shelter program and participated in the Housing Retention program, 100% remained housed at the important benchmarks of 6, 12, 18 and 24 months post-shelter.

RFKRoyal Family KIDS (National), began in 1985 offering a camp experience for abused, abandoned and neglected

children ages 6-12.  Since 2005, Royal Family KIDS of Sandy has provided a week of Christ-centered camp for

children in Utah’s foster care system.  In 2012 we added a year-round mentoring and club program for kids who have

attended camp.  The local organization has no paid staff and relies on many volunteers to make this happen.  Please

go to our website to see how you can help!

crossroadsurbancenter2Crossroads Urban Center   Throughout the year, we collect food, clothing, and household items for this downtown Salt Lake ministry which serves the needs of the homeless and those living in poverty.

Utah_Food_Bank_square_color_logoUtah Food Bank –  Periodically, a group of our members donate time (and energy!) for a fast-paced, fun evening at the Utah Food Bank sorting food or packaging items to be distributed to homeless individuals or those who are in need.

stephen_logo_000Stephen Ministries  Stephen Ministries is a one-to-one lay caring ministry that equips and empowers lay caregivers—called Stephen Ministers—to provide high-quality, confidential, Christ-centered care to people who are hurting, either physically or emotionally.  Many OSLC members have gone through the Stephen Series training and have one or more “care-receivers”.  “Bear one another’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2, NRSV).  Click here to learn more and to listen to Continuing Ed Presentations!

romlogoRivers of Mercy  Rivers of Mercy is a Christ-centered orphanage in Juarez, Mexico, whose desire is to show Christ’s love to the neglected, mistreated, and suffering children in the area.  They provide children with a safe home where they feel loved and where they can know the love of Christ.  OSLC members make a blanket for each child that comes to the orphanage, and we send a portion of our offerings to help with their operating costs.
