Social Ministry

Social Ministry takes place within the congregation, the community, and throughout the world.  God calls us to take care of one another and the least among us. God’s Work—Our Hands!
Our Social Ministry Council Member can answer any questions. Please contact the church office; office@oslcslc.org or 801-278-1412 to find ways to offer help and support.
These are some of the programs and ways that we offer support.
Family Promise Salt Lake
Family Promise
We belong to the Utah branch of this national, interdenominational organization that supports families who find themselves in the circumstance of homelessness. OSLC is one of a number of congregations in the Salt Lake Valley that serve in rotation as a host site, offering temporary shelter and meals to our guests one week at a time, four or five times a year. While their basic needs are being met, guests are able to save their earnings, which allows them to move into housing within 30-45 days. Of the families who transitioned from the shelter program and participated in the Housing Retention program, 100% remained housed at the important benchmarks of 6, 12, 18 and 24 months post-shelter.
Crossroads Urban Center
Throughout the year, we, at OSLC, collect food, clothing, and household items for this downtown Salt Lake ministry which serves the needs of the homeless and those living in poverty.
Utah Food Bank
Periodically, a group of our OSLC members donate time (and energy!) for a fast-paced, fun evening at the Utah Food Bank sorting food or packaging items to be distributed to homeless individuals or those who are in need.
Compassion Care Team
Compassionate Care Team available to offer a listening ear, share a prayer,
or engage in friendly conversation.

Rivers of Mercy
Rivers of Mercy is a Christ-centered orphanage in Juarez, Mexico, whose desire is to show Christ’s love to the neglected, mistreated, and suffering children in the area. They provide children with a safe home where they feel loved and where they can know the love of Christ. OSLC members make a blanket for each child that comes to the orphanage, and we send a portion of our offerings to help with their operating costs.
Rocky Mountain ELCA
Our offerings at OSLC support the ministries of our synod, which serves 175 congregations in Colorado, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming and El Paso, Texas. The Rocky Mountain Synod provides support, networking opportunities and equips the congregations within the Synod to carry out God’s work in our communities and the world.
Evangelical Lutheran Church in America
Over 10,000 congregations and 4.2 million members belong to the ELCA. OSLC offerings support the ministries of our denomination, including Lutheran World Relief, the World Hunger Appeal, The Malaria Campaign, and Lutheran Disaster Response.
